FS - SAFMARINE NOMAZWE AND SAFMARINE NOKWANDA
• The SAFMARINE NOMAZWE, arrived in Cape Town on 7 January 2005. • The vessels were built using the latest available technology, making them of the most modern container vessels in the world. They were built for an undisclosed sum in a state-of-the-art Danish shipyard. • The Safmarine Nokwanda and the Safmarine Nomazwe are of the largest, widest containerships to make scheduled calls at South African ports. • The Safmarine Nomazwe and Safmarine Nokwanda have significantly increased capacity to meet the growing trade between South Africa and Europe. When the original Big Whites were built, their capacity was 2450 teu, which was subsequently upgraded to 3101 teu in line with growing demand from exporters/importers. The container capacity of the Safmarine Nomazwe and Safmarine Nokwanda is 3700 teu. (Interesting comparison - the height of one container is approximately 2.44m; the height of Table Mountain, at its highest point, is 1086 M. So if 3700 containers were stacked, one on top of another, the container stack would equal 8 times that of the height of Table Mountain). • The vessels are larger and much faster than the original Big White container vessels - SA Helderberg, SA Sederberg, SA Winterberg, SA Waterberg (now Maersk Constantia) - which have served the trade for almost 30 years
• The ships have been built to the highest environmental standards and its main engine is the most technologically advanced diesel engine in the world (based on electronic fuel and exhaust valve controls).
SAFMARINE NOKWANDA ...
• SAFMARINE NOKWANDA was named by Mrs Rowitha Köpke, wife of Christoph Köpke, outgoing Chairman of the Board, DaimlerChrysler South Africa. (SAFMARINE NOMAZWE, the first ship to arrive in SA, was named on November 20, 2004 by Mrs Andrea van Wyk, wife of Riaan van Wyk, Managing Director of Paarl-based Colors Fruit (Pty) Ltd). • .. can be operated by a crew of only 15. (18 crew at present). The vessel is registered in Bristol, UK and is commanded by Captain Chris Kortum, a resident of Somerset West. The vessel has an all-South African crew complement and is managed from Cape Town by Safmarine Techical Organisation. • ..and her sister-ship Safmarine Nomazwe were both built in Denmark at the ultra-modern A.P.Moller-Maersk Group's Odense Steel Yard in Lindø, for an undisclosed sum. (Safmarine is an independent member of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, the largest liner shipping group in the world). • ... has a length of 266 metres, a breadth of 37 metres, a depth of 21m and a capacity of 3 700 twenty-foot containers. She is equipped with an 8-cylinder HSD-Wärtsilä Sulzer diesel engine, which develops 45 700 kW at 102 revolutions per minute - equivalent to 62 200 BHP. (The vessel length equals that of almost three rugby fields. It is approximately half the width of a rugby field. Average size of rugby field: field of play is no more than 100 metres by 70 metres). • .. can carry more than 800 FFE refrigerated containers. The reefer containers in the holds are water-cooled, greatly reducing the energy consumption for cooling. • The new fleet has been purpose-built for the Europe-South Africa trade with a focus is on providing service reliability, efficiency and speed. They are specially designed to cater for dry and temperature controlled (eg fruit and meat) shipments. The new ships are equipped with an increased number of plugs capable of accepting integral reefer containers, replacing the current blown air (Conair) or porthole reefer system. Refrigerated container capacity has been at a premium for some time so the increased refrigerated capacity of the new Big Whites will meet the immediate needs of Safmarine's expanding customer base.
- SAFMARINE NOKWANDA, the SECOND of the two new containerships purpose-built by Safmarine for the Europe-South Africa trade arrived in Cape Town on its maiden voyage on Saturday 12 February. • Safmarine Nokwanda is the South African Xhosa name traditionally given to a young bride and signifies expansion. • Safmarine Nokwanda is identical to Safmarine Nomazwe. The new ships are a symbol of Safmarine's confidence in the trade between Europe and Southern Africa. ting facts: • Four diesel generators with a total power of 11 500kW are installed on each vessel. • An alarm, monitoring and control system enables safe and efficient operation of the ship's systems and machinery. • During sea trails the Safmarine Nomazwe and Safmarine Nokwanda registered an average speed of more than 25 knots (1.842 km/h = 1 knot) • According to Safmarine's Marine Executive, Smersh Rabie, the cubic capacity of the main engine of the new container vessel is 14 500 litres, which can be compared to a 2.8 litre engine for a 4 x 4 bakkie.
