FS - NEW SHIPS IN 2008 AND FLEET EXPANSION PROGRAMME
SAFMARINE'S HISTORICAL FLEET EXPANSION PROGRAMME - 2004 TO  APRIL 2008
• Safmarine's fleet expansion programme began in 2004 with the introduction of three new vessels for the Europe- West Africa trade
• In the past four years, Safmarine has added 12 new, owned ships to the fleet; at the end of 2008 the number will be 16 new, owned tonnage (average of four new ships a year).- See table in attachment
• These figures excluded the new, chartered tonnage which has joined the Safmarine fleet, notably the MPV (multi-purpose vessel) fleet which is deployed on the West Africa 'oil and gas' trades.

FLEET EXPANSION PROGRAMME - HIGHLIGHTS
• 2004: Three containerships, purpose built for the Europe-West Africa trade, join the fleet - the Safmarine Cameroun, Safmarine Nimba and Safmarine Kuramo
• 2005: The Safmarine Nomazwe and Safmarine Nokwanda join the fleet and the Europe-SA trade, replacing the original Big Whites (Helderberg-Class) vessels which then moved on to the Safari trade
• 2006/2007: Safmarine's panamax vessels, the Safmarine Meru, Safmarine Mulanje, Safmarine Mafadi, Safmarine Makutu join the SAFARI service between Asia and Southern Africa.
• 2007/2008: The four, original, 'Big White' containerships are phased out of the Safmarine fleet after almost 30 years of service.

2008 - Safmarine's 'Year of the Ship'
• 2008 marks the largest and most ambitious fleet expansion programme in the history of Safmarine.
• Eleven (11) new vessels will join the Safmarine fleet this year alone, seven of them Safmarine-owned and four vessels on long-term charter (two of the four MPV are to be named by Safmarine in 2008).
• According to Safmarine CEO, Ivan Heesom-Green: "2008 is a year of fleet renewal, a year in which Safmarine's USD 600 million fleet investment programme, will come to fruition. This year's ambitious fleet expansion programme - the largest in the history of Safmarine - has been made possible by the good support of our customers. Not only has their support allowed us to invest in new tonnage, in order to meet demands for increased container capacity, but also to operate our vessel fleet in a more fuel-efficient manner."
• To date, three new, owned vessels have joined the Safmarine fleet - Safmarine Ngami, Safmarine Nyassa and Safmarine Kariba.
