TRADE - SAFMARINE NOMAZWE MAIDEN CALL IN SA
Safmarine celebrates maiden call of first new Big Whites 07 Jan 2005
Safmarine Nomazwe arrives in Cape Town on her maiden voyage
The largest and most modern Safmarine containership to call at a South African port, the SAFMARINE NOMAZWE, arrived in Cape Town today (Friday, January 7, 2005) on her maiden call.
SAFMARINE NOMAZWE, the first of Safmarine's new Big White container vessels purpose-built for the Europe-South Africa trade, has an all-South African crew with Captain Leon Strydom, a Cape Town resident, at the helm.
The arrival of the SAFMARINE NOMAZWE in South Africa coincides with the naming of the second new Big White, Hull L195, at the Odense Steel Yard in Denmark.
"It is exciting indeed for Safmariners to be celebrating - on the same day and on opposite ends of the globe - the maiden call of the first new Big White and the naming of the second Big White," said Safmarine CEO, Ivan Heesom-Green. The two new vessels will replace the existing Big Whites that have served the Europe-South Africa trade since the start of containerisation in the late 1970s.
Safmarine NOMAZWE was named in Denmark in November 2004 by Mrs Andrea van Wyk, wife of Riaan van Wyk, MD of Paarl-based Colors Fruit (Pty) Ltd. Today, Mrs Roswitha Köpke, wife of Chistoph Köpke, outgoing Chairman of the Board, DaimlerChrysler South Africa (DCSA), will name the second new Big White in the company of senior executives representing several of Europe and South Africa's largest exporters and importers.
According to Heesom-Green, SAFMARINE NOMAZWE and her sister ship have a length of 266 metres, a breadth of 37 metres and a capacity of 3 700 twenty-foot containers. The vessels are both built applying the latest available technology, making them of the most modern container vessels in the world.
The vessels are equipped with an 8-cylinder HSD-Wärtsilä Sulzer diesel engine, which develops 45 760 kW at 102 revolutions per minute - equivalent to 62 200 BHP. SAFMARINE NOMAZWE is registered in London and her sister ship will also be registered in the UK. The vessels can be operated by a crew of only 15 persons.
