COMMENT - INCREASING SIZE OF DURBAN PORT - APRIL 2012
Jonathan Horn, Safmarine's Southern Africa Cluster Manager:
"Increasing the size of the Durban port - which as South Africa's busiest port, often struggles with severe congestion, particularly during peak periods - has the potential to make South Africa a more competitive and attractive market .

This is because a bigger, more effective port will help shipping lines, such as Safmarine, improve transit times, service reliability and vessel turn around, while offering the benefits of increased efficiencies and flexibility, says Safmarine's Southern Africa Cluster Manager, Jonathan Horn.

"Infrastructural shortcomings - such as a port which is unable to cope with the volumes of cargo moving through it - translate into additional costs in the supply chain and these can affect a country's overall competitiveness and attractiveness as a trading partner.

"Any move to increase capacity in the port of Durban should be seen as a positive one for South Africa and for the Southern African region.

"Investments in enlarging and improving port infrastructure also shows that South Africa is serious about growing its economy, and that the South African government realises the importance of investing ahead of the demand curve as this will allow SA to build a logistics infrastructure that is able to accommodate the growing number of containers moving in and out of the port of Durban."

According to Horn, South Africa, because of its location, is well positioned to exploit the emerging shifts in the patterns of global shipping.  "More and more countries are trading with emerging markets such as Africa, the Middle East and India and South African ports - and Durban port in particular - have a prime location on this growing trade route."

With more than 90% of its imports and exports moving by sea, Horn says South Africa's reliance on sea trade also illustrates the importance of investing in the infrastructure (ports, rail and terminals) to support trade and growth in the SADEC region.   This is because a port such as  Durban also serves as the gateway for cargo into Lesotho and Swaziland and into neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe.

A larger, efficient port also has the potential to reduce shipping's impact on the environment. "When ships are delayed in port, we need to speed up our vessels to make up for the time lost. Not only does speeding up vessels increase cost because of the extra fuel used, but increased fuel usage also negatively impacts the environment."
