STATEMENT - PIRACY - FEB 2012
Piracy is a serious issue and Safmarine's first and foremost concern is the safety of those working onboard Safmarine vessels.

RE: COST/IMPACT

In general, piracy has led to higher transportation costs - examples of these are higher insurance premiums, additional costs for ship owners who need to 'harden' their vessels against potential attacks and higher fuel consumption due to the need to speed up or sail further to avoid high risk areas.

All these costs add to the final cost of doing business with a country, which not only affects the competitiveness of those countries but also impacts the final cost consumers pay for goods which are shipped from one end of the world to the other (ie impact cost of imports).

However, the cost of piracy goes beyond economics -  there is also a social cost.  For example, the delivery of cargo, particularly food aid to Somalia, has also been disrupted by the actions of pirates.

So, while piracy has impacted the shipping business, it is also a threat to important international trade lanes and therefore an international security issue.

As such, we welcome the efforts being made by the international community to tackle the problem.  We believe the matter of piracy needs to be addressed by the nations in the affected regions, with the support of the international community as a whole.  It is not a matter which the shipping industry alone, must deal with.

RE: SAFETY MEASURES/PROCEDURES

Safmarine, as a member of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, the world's largest container shipping group, remains vigilant and constantly monitors the situation in all high risk areas.

Our Group regularly updates its policy, procedures and defensive measures related to piracy based on available civilian and military intelligence as well as best practices recommended by the relevant authorities, maritime and other organisations.

We also examine defensive measures to further boost security onboard our vessels, such as making access to the vessel more difficult and we give detailed instructions and procedures to our crews prior to sailing in high risk areas (this includes reviewing security plans onboard before entering into the area.)

For security reasons and the safety of our crews, the Group does not want to provide any specific details on these measures.
