FEATURE - GAUTENG KEY TO SAFMARINE GROWTH IN SA - SEPT 2010
Gauteng is at the heart of Safmarine's South African operations. With the largest market being Gauteng based, and the majority of exports being controlled here, it stands to reason that Safmarine's office in Johannesburg holds the key to the line's growth in South Africa. This year Safmarine has seen its export market share increase at a higher percentage than the estimated market growth. According to Peter Andre, Regional Executive for Safmarine Gauteng, "This is mainly due to a greater focus on core markets and the strengthening of key customer relationships." Andre says Safmarine offers the market a wide range of products and is always looking for new trade routes and opportunities. "An example of a new opportunity is the newly launched FEW3 service which offers weekly direct connections from key ports in China and Malaysia. The service's direct call in Durban will offer additional space to Safmarine's Southern Africa customers during the traditional high volume peak months. Direct calls are then made to Pointe Noire and Tin Can Island in West Africa." Andre says chemicals company, Sasol, is a strategic partner on this new service and its support for FEW3 follows that provided in 2009 for the launch of Safmarine's 225 service, the line's first dedicated container service between South Africa and West Africa. Launching new services is not the only example of Safmarine's innovation in the Gauteng market. The line has also offer a solution which has seen the conversion of cargo, traditionally shipped in 20ft containers, into 40ft containers. "We've had great success in the Johannesburg market with this conversion drive," says Steven Simpson, Gauteng Export Sales Manager. "The commodity market is an important market for Safmarine. Although lucrative, it's a highly cost sensitive market which is why it is important to do business with customers who are partnership-minded. Aligning ourselves with the right customers allows Safmarine to maintain a steady revenue drive while still ensuring we fully utilize our assets," says Simpson. The current rail capacity challenges and the recent industrial action have also focused on the need to identify alternative ports and transport networks, such as the opportunities offered by Safmarine's Safari 3 service into Maputo. Safmarine Johannesburg, with the support of its customers, has made great progress in utilizing the Maputo port as an alternative export opportunity. Ends
