UPDATE - IMPORT VOLUMES SURGE AHEAD OF WORLD CUP - JUN 2010
Safmarine says import volumes for the first five months of 2010 are substantially higher than volumes for the same period 2009, largely due to an increase in cargo for the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup. According to Roy Ramdiyal, regional head for Safmarine in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Swaziland: "Soccer fever has definitely had a positive impact on our business with high volumes of cargo related to the event - such as clothing and memorabilia - coming in to South Africa via the port of Durban." The bulk of the cargo is from the Far East. Ian Barclay, Safmarine South Africa's National Imports Manager says while a portion of the increased volumes can also be attributed to the restocking of inventories by retailers and importers, cargo manifests are showing that much of the cargo is related to the Cup. "In addition to soccer memorabilia, Safmarine has also carried high volumes of electronics and items used for the refurbishment of hotels and bed and breakfast establishments. And, based on conversations with our customers, it even appears that ordinary South Africans are spending more on building and related materials as they upgrade their homes, not only to accommodate visitors, but to show the country off." Barclay says volumes on the Safari (South Africa - Far East) trade traditionally drop off in the first quarter of the year. This year, however, volumes have remained at 'peak' levels since October 2009. "The Safari volumes didn't drop as they usually do in the November-December and February-May periods and container capacity on the Far East has been under pressure for some time. We expect the situation to continue right until the end of May as a result of last-minute imports of consumables needed for the Cup, particularly those with a limited shelf-life." But the World Cup cargo is not restricted to soccer merchandise and consumables. Safmarine and Damco were also successful in securing a shipment of approximately 300 generators and associated equipment be used to supply power during the World Cup. The containers, provided by Aggreko, will be re-exported within six months. Says Ramdiyal: "Aggreko, who provided power generation units to the Summer Olympics in Beijing, the Winter Olympics in Vancouver as well as the recent Confederations Cup in South Africa, was appointed by the LOC to supply power generators for the broadcasting facilities at the International Broadcast Centre and at all of the stadiums for the World Cup. "Safmarine and Damco were asked by Aggreko to assist them in delivering the required generators to the various locations. It's been a rather complex undertaking as the containers and self-contained units have come into Durban from all over the world (by both ocean and air freight)." Not only has soccer fever been good for Safmarine's business, it's also been used to strengthen the relationships between Safmariners, customers and suppliers in Kwazulu Natal through regular, friendly games. Ramdiyal says the first match of 2010 was played in April this year when a team comprising Safmarine, Maersk Line and Damco in Kwa-Zulu Natal pitted their skills against South African Container Depot (SACD).
